I am unhappy with these laws. Rape gets, on average, an 8 year sentence. If it is even prosecutable. You see cases of statutory rape where a beautiful female teacher has sex with a student, and gets a slap on the wrist. Rape and sexual abuse should have sentences that appropriately reflect the psychological damage they have caused. I don't see why sexual abuse of a child shouldn't deserve a life sentence.

I only know one story, since you are asking. I know someone who, around age 16 or so, was a victim of an attempted rape at a high school at night (after a football game). For whatever reason, she waited 3 months before saying anything. At that point, she went to the police department to file a report, and was treated like she was lying. It took her a while to get over the trauma of what had happened, and really it was very fortunate that she was able to fight off the attackers. This is in CA, by the way.

The biggest problem with prosecuting rape and other sexual crimes is lack of evidence. I think there needs to be a BIG PR campaign to let women know that if they are raped, they need to report it and get a rape kit ASAP. If they wait even one day, most of the evidence is gone, which makes it difficult to impossible to prosecute.

And I agree with Mellien, that statutory rape laws are often arbitrary. Teens having consensual sex with each other should not be considered rapists. There should be some kind of age buffer in statutory rape laws - obviously a 40 year old having sex with a 16 year old is wrong, but a 19 year old and a 17 year old?
References :
US laws as a whole are pretty appalling. They are very arbitrary in places but in other places they are wide open for abuse.

For example, in many states the age of consent is 18 and there are tough statutory rape laws that essentially criminalize children for having over active hormones.

Unless there's molestation involved most cases teenage sex should be a moral issue, not a legal issue, yet under current law an 18 year old boy can be sentenced as a pedophile for having consensual sex with their 17 year old girlfriend. They can get a long custodial sentence and will be listed as a sex offender exactly as if they had raped a small child. Even if it is only oral sex. Even when somebody is over 18 they are treated as if they were a child in many states because age difference laws can criminalize sex if you are over 18 and are having sex with somebody several years older.

In most of the rest of the world people are much more sensible. For example, in the UK the recognize that teenage sex is largely a moral issue. Their age of consent is 16, and there are no age difference clauses (a 17 year old can have sex with a 25 year old and it will be 100% legal so long as it is consensual).

Teenager are also rarely prosecuted for having sex unless there is force or date rape involved.

They have about the same level of teenage sex, but their teenage pregnancy rate is lower.

Oh, and multiple rapists and child molesters need to be taken along to the vet.
References :
I am extremely dissatisfied with them in all of the USA. The Supreme Court has declared that child molestation and rape are not punishable by death, per the 8th Amendment. I disagree. I think both should be punishable by death.

I've prosecuted several child and adult rapes, and I see the damage done to victims of all ages.

No, not at all. I live in Oklahoma, which has a reasonable age of consent.
