Are 3D computer graphic representations of child abuse illegal in the US?

September 25th, 2009

Recently two adults were banned from Second Life because of sexual ‘age-play’. The reason being that their activities represented by child and adult avatars depicted child abuse.

The Protect Act of 2003 excludes drawings, anime, cartoons, and/or comic satire.

The FBI have a different view, though:

Because of a 2003 federal obscenity law, that’s illegal . The law, designed to help protect children from sexual exploitation, makes it a federal crime to produce or distribute obscene drawings, cartoons, paintings, or any other visual representations involving the sexual abuse of children.

What exactly is the situation then?

Welcome to the murky world of internet regulation. why is it illegal for me to cope a bunch of pixels, look at them, then delete them, if all I’m doing is looking? Who knows?
